The Commander of the National Community Ethics and Values, Environmental Compliance Corps, NCEVECC,Ogun State Command, Onilu Obasnjo Johnson has debunked allegations that the NGO is an illegal, extortive and unknown organisation which aim is to dabble into the duties of Environmental Health Officers in Ogun State.
He disclosed this during an interview with Newslife at NCEVECC event held in Abeokuta
The allegations, published in an online blog a day after NCEVECC had its Passing out Parade of members of the Corps at the MKO Abiola international Stadium Abeokuta.
Commander Johnson who narrated how NCEVECC was established, said that it was the Former Special Adviser to Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and Values, Dr(Mrs) Sarah jibril that brought the idea from Canada and replicated it in Nigeria, added that the corps has Mr.Gana Yussuf as the acting Commandant General, and its National Headquarters in Abuja, also has structures through the 36 states in Nigeria.
On allegations, the NCEVECC boss said that the Corps as an NGO has been registered by the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, and at the National Assembly, its bill is at second reading. stage.
“We are not set out to extort anybody under any guise or dabble into the good work of the Environmental Health Officers but to support what they are doing, Government has done well in this area, but they cannot employ enough staffers, NCEVECC is an NGO that has to do with general duties, We are here to support what other agencies and uniform bodies have been doing”
He attributed the allegations which he described as baseless and unfounded to misinformation on the part of the purveryors of the published story.
“for instance people are saying we are Environmental Health Officers, No. I, myself as a sanitarian cannot go against the rules and regulations of Environmental Health.
” The issue is that we have to support what they are doing. Ethics and Values are also parts of what we projecting in our communities. For instance if we find indiscriminate dump of refuse anywhere, ours is just to call the attention of Environmental Health Officers to come and perform their duties” He stated.
Onilu also disclosed that the organization hasd sent letters to Environmental Health Association in the state and NCEVECC is yet to receive response from them, adding that the NGO is set to give maximum support to ensure cleaner environment and crime free communities in Ogun State.
