The Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, Engr.Gbenga Dairo has appealed to all road users to adhere to general acceptable rules and be mindful of rights of others while plying the roads.
He stated this during the presentation of a dummy cheque of #1m donated by Ogun state government towards the full rehabilitation of one the state cyclists, basset okon, who was severely injured in an accident during a recent cycling competition held in Abeokuta.
Engr.Dairo said the accident could have been avoided if there have been mindfulness and respect for other road users.
He stated”The accident that happened on the road was one that involved an gentleman and a cyclist
That day, we were trying to wave him to slow down and I was driving behind bassey and instead of the driver to stop he accelerated and ran into bassey. Bassey was then crushed and dragged for almost 100 metres this exacerbated his injuries.
“We later discovered that the gentleman has no driving license,his documents, not up to date and his car has no insurance cover
“This type of incident is one that is not uncommon in Abeokuta and other parts of the state.it is one we cannot turn a blind eye to.it is one of the issues want to address” the Commissioner concluded.
The injured cyclist, Bassey okon expressed his gratitude to the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
Okon was one of the over hundred cyclists that particited in a cycling event organized by FC cycle care on 13th September,2020
